- FILE-IT
- A Pop-Up Bibliographer
-
-
- THE PACKAGE
-
- FILE-IT is a quick-reference bibliographic tool which maintains and
- retrieves an indexed database for you. It consists of three files:
- FILE-IT.EXE (the program itself), FILE-IT.CAT (the category file),
- and FILE-IT.LST (the data itself). The distribution disk also has
- sample versions of the category and data files; you are expected to
- edit the latter two to fit your own requirements.
-
- This product is distributed as SHAREWARE. If you find it useful, a
- $20 contribution is requested; the mailing address is:
-
- Chip Rabinowitz
- 51 E. Rogues Path
- Huntington Station, NY 11746
-
- DISCLAIMER
-
- While I've taken every precaution to make FILE-IT free of errors,
- like most software you use it at your own risk. No liability for
- any form of damages is assumed, nor is any warranty express or
- implied provided.
-
- Now that the legal requirements are met, let me know if you have
- any problems with FILE-IT. My intention is to provide professional

- INSTALLING FILE-IT
-
- Initially it's a good idea to use the sample .CAT and .LST files
- provided. When you have become familiar with the program, you can
- delete the .LST file to create your own database. A .CAT file must
- be present for FILE-IT to run properly; edit the categories to show
- your own interests.

- USING FILE-IT
-
- To use FILE-IT, all you do is type FILE-IT at the DOS prompt. The
- Master Menu will pop up, giving you a choice of four actions:
-
- 1. Add an Entry
- 2. Find an Entry
- 3. Edit Categories
- 4. Exit from FILE-IT
-
- Press one of the indicated keys to choose the corresponding action.
- All other keys are ignored and will do nothing while the Master
- Menu is displayed.
-
- ADD AN ENTRY
-
- When you press key '1', the Master Menu is replaced by the list of
- categories. Above this list is the blank Entry form, with the
- cursor positioned at the first character of the Name of Item field.
- Type the name of the item you want to add (up to 55 characters) and
- press RETURN.
-
- The cursor then moves to the Date field for you to type in the date
- of the magazine. When you've done that, it moves to Page Number for
- you to enter the page number on which the item appears. Once you
- type the page number and press RETURN, you're ready to index the
- item by the displayed categories. Up to 51 categories are avail-
- able. Select a category either by using the cursor keys to move to
- it and then pressing RETURN, or by typing its identifying letter.
- Note that all 26 upper case letters A through Z are used, but only
- 25 of the lower case set. The lower case 'z' returns you to the
- Master Menu. You can index the item using up to 11 categories; you
- must select at least one to be able to find it later.
-
- After you have selected the final category for the item, press
- RETURN to add another item, or the lower case 'z' to return to the
- Master Menu. FILE-IT will update its files automatically.
-
-
- FILE AN ENTRY
-
- When you press key '2', the Master Menu is again replaced by the
- list of categories. This time, though, you're using them to tell
- FILE-IT what you are interested in finding. Select as many cate-
- gories as you like (up to 11) either by using the cursor keys to
- move to it and then pressing RETURN, or by typing its identifying
- letter.
-
- As in Adding an Entry, the 'z' ends category entry. FILE-IT then
- searches for all items in its .LST file which match the categories
- you have told it to look for, and displays the first match at the
- top of the screen. Press 'N' to get the next one, or ESC to return
- to the Master Menu.
-
-
-

-
-
-
- EDIT CATEGORIES
-
- When you press key '3', the list of categories again replaces the
- Master Menu. Now you're using it to tell FILE-IT which category you
- want to edit.
-
- Select a category either by using the cursor keys to move to it and
- then pressing RETURN, or by typing its identifying letter. The old
- entry for that category appears at the top of the screen and you
- are prompted for a new entry to replace it. You can type up to 20
- characters. When you press RETURN, the new entry replaces the old
- on the menu.
-
- You can continue as long as you like. When you're done, press the
- lower case 'z' to return to the Master Menu. FILE-IT will update
- its files automatically.
-
-
- EXIT FROM FILE-IT
-
- When you press key '4', the Master Menu vanishes and you return to
- the DOS prompt. The FILE-IT files will reflect any changes you have
- made during this session.
-
-
- DELETING ENTRIES
-
- FILE-IT includes no provisions for deleting list entries once they
- have been added. The intent is to provide a permanent database of
- information. The storage format is such that the .LST file cannot
- be edited by most text editors or word processors. Should this turn
- out to be a problem for you, let me know; such a capability might
- be added to a future release.
